What you wear to your engagement session is kind of a big deal.
We work with every client to curate outfits that fit their personality and style. Here are a few tips and tricks on how to dress in order to feel AND look your best. What to wear to your engagement session has many variables, these are the top 7!
1.) Wear What Makes YOU Feel Confident!
It could be a long, flowy maxi dress, some trousers and a blouse, a cocktail dress, or jeans and a t-shirt. We all have our own unique taste, and we 100% embrace the unique-ness that is you and your style. Look at it this way, when you’re dressed your best, you feel confident & that reflects in your photos. Same with the latter, if you aren’t dressed in something that you absolutely love, then most likely you’re going to be uncomfortable and not be ready to slay your session. With a few exceptions to this rule, we always encourage our couples to dress up and choose an outfit that best reflects them as an individual.
You Can Never Be Too Overdressed
Keep in mind, the location of your shoot should play a role in how you dress. If you’re at the beach, trousers and a blouse for you, and a suit for your man, might not make sense (even though we always encourage our couples to dress to the nines for their sessions) If you’re going to hike to the peak of a mountain with us, don’t dress in stilettos, etc. Which brings us to the next tip…

2.) Always Dress for the Weather/Location!
This one is pretty self-explanatory. If it’s 80 degrees out, the last thing you want to wear is pants and a chunky sweater. If it’s chilly out, you don’t want to be thinking about how freezing you are in a summer dress. What to wear to your engagement session must be comfortable! You get the point. Be smart, and dress accordingly to the climate and location. Some of our couples WILL bare the weather and dress in something cute just for the pictures. So again it’s totally up to you, just keep your comfort in mind!
3.) Bring Props and Accessories!
Props can add a fun little twist to your session. It can be as simple as a hat or sunglasses, or you can go all out and bring your fur-baby. (10/10 would recommend, because let’s be real, cute doggos are the greatest thing to have happened to us). You can even get creative and make your own props! A sign that says “save the date”, “we’re engaged” etc, bring a picnic with champagne, or even just a cozy blanket to cuddle up with. Your options are endless with this one! As always, we can help spark the creativity and give you suggestions on what we think would be the best option for your specific session.
This isn’t always necessary, so don’t freak out! Here’s a gorgeous engagement session at blacks beach where the couple did not use props!
4.) Don’t Wear Matching Outfits!
This one is almost every photographers nightmare. When their couples, or families show up to the session wear the EXACT. SAME. THING. We’ve all seen those photos where everyone is in jeans a white shirt, or the couple has on matching colors. Just don’t do it (please!). Instead, try complimentary colors. If he wears a light blue dress shirt, try and wear a pastel yellow or coral color. Complimentary colors tend to photograph a lot better and gives dimension to the photos instead of everyone matching!
5.) Bring an Extra Outfit!
We always recommend our couples to bring at least one other outfit to change into for their session, so it switches things up and you aren’t wearing the same outfit for the entire session. Our couples normally choose to bring one dressier outfit, and one more casual. Also, for the ladies we recommend bringing an extra pair of shoes to put on if you don’t want to walk around the entire time in heels! (we know the struggle.) It’ll save you a lot of pain and discomfort if you bring some sandals or flats to wear while we are going to and from each location.

6.) Get your Makeup & Hair Professionally Done!
If you can have these done, we would highly recommend doing so! It gives you a chance to be pampered, and gives you an extra confidence boost when you look and feel great. Get excited, because glam is coming! What to wear to your engagement session involves looking glam, so glam up! Makeup artists know all of the tips and tricks to get your makeup looking on point, and have it last all day during the session. We’d recommend getting your nails done as well, it helps compliment your gorgeous engagement ring, so go all out!
7.) Simplicity is Best!
Don’t wear shirts that have large logos or crazy designs. What to wear to your engagement session usually involves not looking tacky! Try not to wear patterned clothing, but if you do wear something that has a pattern, the other needs to wear a solid color. Simple clothing items tend to work best and don’t take away the focus from the couple. We always recommend lighter, pastel colors and to try and stay away from darker colors. Although we wear black almost everyday (you feel us?) we wouldn’t wear it to an engagement session because it’s too dark and can look unflattering.
